funkyAddOn Firefox add-On updated

Hello folks!

Finally, 12 days after funkysnooker's makeover, the add-On has been updated and made compatible with the site!

A new feature has also been added, due to the possibility to change your colour scheme on funkysnooker: you can now modify the font colour and the background colour of the additional statistics added by the add-On. You can do that in the add-On options (from the menu 'Tools > Add-Ons', find funkyAddOn and press the 'Options' button).

You can download the new version from this link.

Installation instructions (reminder): Unzip it, then open the .xpi file from your Firefox browser, or just drag the file into any Firefox window. After installation, you'll be asked to restart Firefox. Finally, you'll need to enable the features, as they are disabled by default; you can do that by opening the "Tools > Add-ons" menu, searching for the "funkyAddOn" entry, and clicking "Options".

damee enters the Unofficial Hall of Fame!

Hello folks!

I'm proud to announce the creation of our our Unofficial Hall of Fame, in which one player will be added every month, elected by votes on the forum. Players who will join this list will be players who will have proven their outstanding skills in any manner. The organization of this Unofficial Hall of Fame is to be thanked to virtuoso107.

The very first player to join this list is damee, who probably doesn't need to be presented anymore. His skills really are outstanding, and have been proven many times, in very different domains. Let's try to summarize his deeds in a (non-exhaustive) list:
  • he has impressive statistics in Original, including an incredible 14 maximum breaks, over 300 centuries and over 1300 half-centuries
  • he is one of the very few players (exactly 6 for the time being) having hit a maximal break in all game types, and of the even fewer players (3) having hit at least twice each maximal break
  • he is the only player having hit a maximal break in all game types in one single day
  • he is one of the best carom players, leader of the ladder for ages, with an impressive 40% success percentage
  • having a big success in all game types, he has been at the top of the overall ladder for very long, only surpassed by destiny
  • even if this Unofficial Hall of Fame is only related to snooker, we can't forget he is also one of the best overall pool players, staying near the very top of the overall ladder, having an absolute run record in straight, and many more
  • last, but not least, he has been a moderator for over a year
With such a long and impressive list, it's no surprise he has easily won the first elections round.
Here are the detailed results of the vote, held on the funkysnooker forums:
- damee: 15 votes
- destiny: 6 votes
- ste_efc: 3 votes

Congratulations to damee, the first member of our Unofficial Hall of Fame!

funkyAddOn Firefox add-On updated.

Hello!

A small news just to inform you that I have upgraded my firefox add-on. The changes are small, but worth listing them:
  • the CSS fix has been removed, as it has been fixed on the standard sites
  • you now have the option to display your games per century for won games, for all games, or for both (as an answer to this forum thread)
  • the options window has been a bit cleaned up
I hope I'll be able to include some more features in the close future... stay tuned!

Edited on 30th May: A bug fix has been released in the new, 1.0.3 version of the add-on. The download link has been updated.

Funkysnooker Clan League

Hello!

Today I'll present an upcoming event, which you could have missed if you don't follow the Clan Chat forum: the funkysnooker Clan League!

Organized by alexo, who has already proven his organizer skills in the funkysnooker vs. funkypool match, and who will be helped by iamtheworst, damee and youngjeezy, this league is very promising and will surely be very successful!

The league, whose website has already been released, includes 3 trophies to win each season:
Not less than 7 clans have registered in the league: Poolers clan, Assassins, Ruff ryders, Hustlers, Heroes, The Goodfellas and The Staff, which means that a total of 7 weeks of fixtures will be played in the first season!

I'm looking forward to playing in this league, and seeing the success it will encounter; hopefully, it can be carried on during several seasons!

Let's wish good luck to all participants and to the organizers!

New funkysnooker game layout

Hello folks!

After a (too) long time of absence, due to illness, work, and other activities, I'm back!

Almost 1 month ago, funkysnooker has adopted funkypool's update, consisting of a fully revised game layout. Using newer and more mature programming technologies than the old one, it allows and simplifies the creation of many visual features, the more important being a more intuitive and evolutive user interface, and allowing to use nicer (e.g. rounded) layouts.

Besides this reviewed user interface, a few things have changed in the game itself, which can affect gameplay a lot. The more puzzling one is the new default cursor, which is a "ghost ball", meaning that it shows exactly the place your cue ball will go. Therefore it's much more precise than the old "circle" cursor, and even if it can be hard to get used to it, its increased precision is worth learning to play with it!

All this is not really new anymore. However, since almost one month has passed since the update, people begin to get really used to the gameplay changes, and we can already observe a global skill increase. For example, just yesterday, not less than 7 different people have hit an original century! Also, very high breaks get hit more and more regularly, and I eventually even fell myself out of the top 10 original high breaks! And we cannot forget the 2 new original 147 breaks that have been hit by destiny and heart_beat!

I personally think that despite the complaints about the gameplay changes, it's safe to conclude that this update is positive at every point of vue. Indeed, people stop complaining as they get used to the update, which finally helps them playing better!

funkyAddOn Firefox add-On released!

Hello!

It's been a while since my last post, partly due to the research work required for my newest creation: a Firefox add-on extending some functionalities on funkysnooker and funkypool websites!

In its first and current version (1.0), the add-on has 2 features:
  • "Make selected text viewable": Due to Firefox' special behaviour in some cases, the selected text in the content part of the sites is barely visible (selected is blue on white, non-selected is black on white). With the add-on you can override this behaviour, and have the selected text in white on blue as in Internet Explorer. This works on both funkysnooker and funkypool!
  • "Add additional stats on users' profile": This will add the "Games per century" and the "Games per half-century" statistics on every user's profile. Of course, this works on funkysnooker only, and for Arcade, Regular and Original game types. The value's background is slightly different from the normal one, so you can know at any time that it's not a funkysnooker core feature.

To install the add-on, you need to first download it from this link. Unzip it, then open the .xpi file from your Firefox browser, or just drag the file into any Firefox window. After installation, you'll be asked to restart Firefox. Finally, you'll need to enable the features, as they are disabled by default; you can do that by opening the "Tools > Add-ons" menu, searching for the "funkyAddOn" entry, and clicking "Options".

Oh, and the add-on supports only Firefox version 3.0 or above. Maybe it works with older versions too, but I didn't test them.

If you find any issue, or have ideas to improve the add-on and add valuable functionalities, don't hesitate to let me know, I'll be glad to include them in future releases!

Edited on 12th March: A minor fix has been released in the new, 1.0.1 version of the add-on. The download link has been updated.

Funkysnooker videos

Hello!

I've just added a gadget to this blog, which will display funkysnooker videos from Youtube. You can even watch the videos without leaving the blog!

I first wanted to place the most recent videos on top. However it seems the video selection is a bit buggy when it searches the most recent videos, so I removed the ordering criterion. Now I don't know how it will decide which videos to display on top, but at least it displays only funkysnooker ones!

You'll find this gadget on the right side of the page.

Enjoy!

Tips & Tricks: General tactics

So I decided to share the main lines of my tactics for my first article. These ideas have helped me a lot in getting to the top, and I hope they will help you as well. I try to order them in order of importance as well as possible.

(1) Know your own weaknesses. Don't go for a shot you are about sure to miss (unless the outcome of the match is already certain, of course). Play a safety instead, and spend some time practicing that hard shot, so next time you can take it in a match!

(2) Practice the colors. The colors are always respotted at the exact same place, so all you need to remember is where to place exactly your cursor. If you're sure to pot any color off its spot, you're already sure to pot (almost) 50% of your shots! Don't forget to practice them into unusual pockets, just in case you lost cue ball control.
Blue ball is crucial, as it's situated on the center of the table, so it's really easy to take a good position for it, from anywhere on the table. If you can pot it in all 6 pockets, then you're one big step forward.

(3) Master spin. Especially top spin and back spin. Understand completely and in details how they work. This will help you a lot in your cue control, so you can continue your break more easily. Spend some time on the practice table taking a few shots to nothing, just to observe the effect of the spin.
Also note that the "new" spin's effect also depends on the cue ball's speed when it hits the target ball. This allows you, for example, to have a really strong effect (either forwards or backwards) if you're close to the target ball.

(4) Maximize your game window. The greater the table is on your screen, the more precisely you can aim every shot, because every pixel represents a smaller part of the table.
Maximize your browser window (click in your address bar, and press F11). To de-maximize it, press F11 again (you may have to click on the page's background before, e.g. next to the "Help" and "Register" links).
If needed, you can also make the chat area smaller by pressing the small number next to the player's list. Making it smaller will free even more space for the snooker table.

(5) Take your time. Even an easy shot needs concentration. Almost any shot can be missed if you don't pay enough attention to it... I've missed myself some unmissable shots just by lack of concentration.

I hope these tips will help you to improve your performances.
Don't hesitate to react to these tips, or post your own ones, in the comments!

FunkyBlutch created!

Hello everyone!

I'm glad to announce the creation of the FunkyBlutch blog!

This blog is mainly intended to share my funkysnooker (and maybe funkypool) experience with everybody. This includes news about the updates, important events, tips & tricks, and probably a lot more!

Please note this is NOT an official funkysnooker blog! Your main information source should remain funkysnooker itself, this blog being only considered as my personal way to discuss, share and spread what happens on funkysnooker. Therefore, funkysnooker isn't responsible for anything that happens here.

See you soon!
